RBC Training Ground Alumni Krissy Scurfield competed at her first Olympic Games in Paris this summer and helped the Women’s Rugby 7s team bring home a silver medal.
The 2024 Paris Olympics were an incredible event, highlighting the best talent from around the world. With 16 RBC Training Ground alumni nominated to Team Canada, our athletes not only competed in Paris – they made history by bringing home a combined 7 Olympic medals. But did you know that these Olympians were at one time dreaming big and taking the first steps in their athletic careers by signing up to participate at RBC Training Ground?
Today, as we count down the weeks before our signature National Final event on November 2nd in Halifax, we’re thrilled to highlight the achievements of these notable program alumni.
RBC Training Ground Highlights from #Paris2024
- GOLD – Jerome Blake (2017) * and the Canadian 4x100m Relay Team. Along with relay teammates Andre De Grasse, Aaron Brown and Brendan Rodney, RBC Training Ground alum Jerome Blake sprinted his way to Olympic history in Paris, claiming the first gold medal in the event since 1996. This is a follow up from Jerome’s silver medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
- SILVER – Avalon Wasteneys (2017) * and Abby Dent (2019)*: Women’s Eight Rowing. While this is the first Olympic medal for Abby, Avalon brings home her second, as she won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
- SILVER – Women’s Rugby Sevens make history: In an incredible display of speed, strength, power and endurance, RBC Training Ground alumni Krissy Scurfield (2021) *, Fancy Bermudez (2018)*, Chloe Daniels (2018)* and Carissa Norsten (2021)* fought for a well-earned second place finish on the rugby pitch. Their success is a powerful reminder that with passion and hard work, you can achieve greatness.
- HONOURABLE MENTIONS – In addition to the medallists, track cyclists Kelsey Mitchell (2017)*, Lauriane Genest (2017)*, Sarah Orban (2017)* and canoe kayak sprint athlete Sophia Jensen (2018)* all produced top 8 performances in Paris. Way to go!

What is the National Final?
Based on the results of RBC Training Ground qualifying (and virtual) testing, 100 of the top athletes are invited to the National Final for one last chance at funding. This all-expense paid trip represents the final stage of testing prior to selection of this year’s RBC Future Olympians – the top 30 athletes who are chosen for continued support through the program.
